Your Joomla website is invisible to AI, but you can fix that yourself

Have you ever considered that AI assistants can actually barely read your website?

Not because your website is bad. Not because you have done something wrong. But simply because websites were originally built for human eyes and browsers, while AI works very differently.

Let that sink in for a moment, because this is something that will become increasingly important in the years ahead: whether your website can be found and properly understood by the AI tools that more and more people rely on every day.

How AI "sees" your website

Imagine asking someone to summarise a book, but you give him the book wrapped in 20 layers of wrapping paper. He has to remove all that paper before he can read even one sentence. Tiring, time-consuming, and all sorts of things easily go wrong in that process.

That's how it works with AI and ordinary websites too.

A normal web page consists largely of invisible code: style rules, buttons, menus, ad blocks, scripts and dozens of other technical layers that you as a visitor never see, but that are just there. Research by Cloudflare shows that an average web page contains as much as five times as much technical clutter as real content when an AI has to process it. That takes processing power, that takes time, and if you use AI services, it also literally costs money.

Markdown is a language that AI does understand

There is a simpler way to format text: Markdown. You may have heard of it, though you may not consciously use it yourself yet.

Markdown is a light writing style where you use a few simple marks to indicate what is a header, what should be bold, or what forms a list. No formatting code, no hidden style layers, just clean, readable text with a little bit of structure.

And that is exactly what AI loves.

When an AI assistant receives a page in Markdown instead of plain HTML, it does not have to filter out a mountain of clutter. It immediately sees the structure, understands the content faster and gives better answers to the user. That research by Cloudflare shows that the amount of text to be processed falls by 80 per cent on average in the process, without losing a single word of content.

In short: your message arrives better, faster, and to more people.

Why this is relevant for Joomla builders now

Big tech companies are already pushing this. Cloudflare launched a system in early 2026 where their network automatically converts web pages to Markdown when an AI agent requests it. Even popular AI programming tools like Claude Code already do this by default.

But what does this mean for you as a Joomla developer?

Until recently, there was no easy way for Joomla to do this. You had to dive into it technically yourself, or just leave it at that and hope that AI tools would understand your clients websites properly anyway.

That has now changed.

The solution: a free Joomla plugin

I have developed a free markdown plugin for Joomla that automatically takes care of this for you.

After installation, your website will automatically recognise when an AI assistant or AI crawler comes along. Instead of the usual pile of HTML code, the website then sends back a neat, clean Markdown version, exactly what that AI needs. For normal visitors via the browser, nothing changes at all: they will still see your website exactly as always.

What the plugin does specifically:

  • Automatic recognition of AI visitors, without you having to configure anything
  • Clean Markdown version of each page, automatically generated from your existing Joomla content
  • Handy header that tells AI tools how big the page is, so they can work more efficiently
  • Completely transparent to ordinary visitors, without any effect on how your website looks

Install via the regular Joomla extension manager, just like any other plugin. No technical knowledge required, no complicated settings.

And the result:

Take a look at the source code of this HTML page: 1717 lines
And compare this with the source code of this .md page: only 110 lines

What does it deliver for your customers?

If you build websites for others, this is an argument that comes up more and more, whether it's about chatbots, AI search or smart assistants.

People are increasingly using AI tools to search for information. They ask their assistant something, and it retrieves information from websites. If your website is well understood in the process, you increase the chances of your customer being visible in those answers. That is the new form of being findable on the internet, where Markdown plays a silent but important role.

You can think of it as a modern successor to the old story of SEO: back then, too, you had to make small adjustments to make sure search engines understood your website properly. Now you do that for AI.

Getting started

The plugin is free to download and works with Joomla 5 and 6. After installation, you don't need to set anything up, just enable it and it does its work in the background.
