## Automatische Joomla updates (Joomla 5.4+)

Met de komst van Joomla 5.4 zet het CMS een grote stap richting gebruiksvriendelijkheid én veiligheid. Een van de meest opvallende vernieuwingen: automatische core-updates. In dit artikel leg ik uit wat deze feature inhoudt, hoe het werkt en waarom dit voor jou als Joomla-gebruiker belangrijk is.

 
## Wat zijn automatische updates?

 Tot nu toe moest je als Joomla-beheerder altijd handmatig updates uitvoeren. Dit betekent: inloggen op je website, controleren of er een nieuwe versie is, en vervolgens zelf de update starten. Vanaf Joomla 5.4 kan dit proces volledig automatisch verlopen. Dankzij een nieuwe client-serverstructuur kan je website voortaan zelf updates downloaden, installeren én jou op de hoogte houden van het resultaat.

 Kort gezegd: je Joomla-site houdt zichzelf up-to-date, zonder dat jij iets hoeft te doen.

 Let op:

 *1) Geautomatiseerde updates zijn alleen beschikbaar voor websites die openbaar toegankelijk zijn via het internet. Als je site zich achter een firewall bevindt of niet publiek toegankelijk is, zoals een lokale testomgeving, dan moet je handmatig updaten.*

 *2) Geautomatiseerde updates worden alleen ondersteund voor het "default"-kanaal en met "Minimum Stability" ingesteld op "Stable".*

 *3) Deze geautomatiseerde updates worden alleen uitgevoerd op Joomla zelf. Extensies worden niet meegenomen in deze updates.*

 
## Hoe werkt het precies?

 De automatische updatefunctie is slim opgebouwd met veiligheid en betrouwbaarheid als uitgangspunt:

 Betrouwbare update-informatie via [TUF (The Update Framework) welke is geintroduceerd in Joomla 5.1](https://www.joomill.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=182:wat-is-nieuw-in-joomla51&catid=8:blog&Itemid=112) – De updateinformatie wordt niet ‘gepusht’ door een centrale server, maar jouw site haalt deze informatie zelf op.

 Bekende update-methode – Het downloaden, controleren en uitpakken van updates gebeurt via de bestaande [Joomla Update-component.](https://www.joomill.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=102:joomla-updates&catid=22:joomla-algemeen&Itemid=913)

 Beveiligde communicatie – Jouw site registreert zich bij de update-server met een unieke authenticatietoken. Alleen die server kan updates triggeren.

 Notificaties per e-mail – Na een update ontvang je als beheerder een mail.

 
## Wat moet je doen om het te gebruiken?

 Als je straks upgrade naar Joomla 5.4, krijg je een melding dat automatische updates beschikbaar zijn. Met deze belangrijke functie komen ook de volgende aanpassingen in Joomla.

 
- Een guided tour om de automatische updates in te schakelen.
- Een quick icon op het dashboard waarmee je de status van de automatische updates kunt controleren.
- Nieuwe e-mailtemplates voor notificaties.
- CLI-commando’s om jouw site te registreren of af te melden bij de update-server.
- Een post-install bericht dat bestaande gebruikers attent maakt op deze nieuwe functie.

 Je hoeft je site maar één keer te registreren bij de update-server. Dit doe je via Systeem > Joomla updates > Opties > Automatische updates.

 Wil je liever zelf de controle houden? Geen probleem. Je kunt automatische updates op elk moment uitschakelen.

 
## Waarom is dit belangrijk?

 Veiligheid is cruciaal voor elke website. Veel Joomla-sites blijven te lang draaien op verouderde versies, wat risico’s oplevert. Door updates te automatiseren: Blijft je website altijd beschermd tegen de laatste kwetsbaarheden.

 
## Wat zijn mogelijke nadelen van automatische updates?

 Hoewel automatische updates handig en tijdbesparend zijn, kleven er ook nadelen aan.

 Een veelvoorkomend risico is dat een update onverwachte problemen veroorzaakt met bestaande functionaliteiten of maatwerk. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan plug-ins of extensies die na een update niet meer compatibel zijn, of thema’s die ineens fouten vertonen.

 Bovendien heb je bij automatische updates minder grip op het moment van installatie; een update kan plaatsvinden op een moment dat je daar net niet op zit te wachten, zoals tijdens piekuren of vlak voor een belangrijke lancering.

 Het wordt hiermee steeds belangrijker dat je ook automatisch backups maakt (voorafgaand aan een update) en dat de extensies regelmatig bijgewerkt worden om problemen te voorkomen.

## Automatic Joomla updates (Joomla 5.4+)

With the arrival of Joomla 5.4, the CMS takes a big step towards user-friendliness as well as security. One of the most striking innovations: automatic core updates. In this article, I explain what this feature entails, how it works and why it is important for you as a Joomla user.

 
## What are automatic updates?

 Until now, as a Joomla administrator, you always had to perform updates manually. This means: log into your website, check if there is a new version, and then start the update yourself. From Joomla 5.4 onwards, this process can be fully automatic. Thanks to a new client-server structure, your website can now download and install updates itself and keep you informed about the result.

 In short: your Joomla site keeps itself up-to-date, without you having to do anything.

 Note:

 *1) Automated updates are only available for websites that are publicly accessible via the internet. If your site is behind a firewall or not publicly accessible, such as a local test environment, you will need to update manually.*

 *2) Automated updates are only supported for the "default" channel and with "Minimum Stability" set to "Stable".*

 *3) These automated updates are only performed on Joomla itself. Extensions are not included in these updates.*

 
## How exactly does it work?

 The automatic update function is cleverly built with security and reliability in mind:

 Reliable update information via [TUF (The Update Framework) which was introduced in Joomla 5.1](https://www.joomill.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=290&catid=8%3Ablog&Itemid=2774) - The update information is not 'pushed' by a central server, but your site retrieves this information itself.

 Known update method - Downloading, checking and unpacking updates is done via the existing [Joomla Update component.](https://www.joomill.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=224&catid=22%3Ajoomla-algemeen&Itemid=2776)

 Secure communication - Your site registers with the update server with a unique authentication token. Only that server can trigger updates.

 Notifications by e-mail - After an update, you as administrator will receive an e-mail.

 
## What do you need to do to use it?

 When you upgrade to Joomla 5.4 soon, you will get a notification that automatic updates are available. With this important feature also come the following changes to Joomla.

 
- A guided tour to enable automatic updates.
- A quick icon on the dashboard that lets you check the status of automatic updates.
- New email templates for notifications.
- CLI commands to register or unregister your site with the update server.
- A post-install message alerting existing users to this new feature.

 You only need to register your site with the update server once. You do this via System > Joomla updates > Options > Automatic updates.

 Would you rather keep control yourself? No problem. You can disable automatic updates at any time.

 
## Why is this important?

 Security is crucial for any website. Many Joomla sites stay running on outdated versions for too long, posing risks. By automating updates: Always keeps your website protected against the latest vulnerabilities.

 
## What are possible disadvantages of automatic updates?

 While automatic updates are convenient and time-saving, there are also drawbacks.

 A common risk is that an update causes unexpected problems with existing functionalities or customisations. Think, for instance, of plug-ins or extensions that are no longer compatible after an update, or themes that suddenly show errors.

 Moreover, with automatic updates, you have less control over the moment of installation; an update may occur at a time when you are just not waiting for it, such as during peak hours or just before an important launch.

 This makes it increasingly important that you also make automatic backups (prior to an update) and that extensions are regularly updated to avoid problems.

## Wat is de laatste Joomla versie?

Normaal gesproken moet je de meest recente versie van Joomla gebruiken voor een nieuwe site tenzij je een specifieke reden hebt om dat niet te doen. Controleer regelmatig of jouw website nog de meest recente versie gebruikt.

## Updaten naar de meest recente Joomla versie

 Wanneer je een eerdere versie gebruikt van de huidige serie (bijvoorbeeld, je hebt versie 3.6.5), moet je updaten naar de huidige versie. Elke kleine versie lost een aantal bugs en/of veiligheidsproblemen op. Daarnaast zorgt het voor nieuwe functionaliteiten en mogelijkheden (zoals het gebruik van de nieuwste PHP-versie waardoor je website weer sneller wordt).

## What is the latest Joomla version?

Normally, you should use the most recent version of Joomla for a new site unless you have a specific reason not to. Check regularly that your website is still using the most recent version.

 **Currently, {php file="jversion.php"} is the most recent version.**

## Updating to the most recent Joomla version

 If you are using an earlier version of the current series (for example, you have version 3.6.5), you should update to the current version. Each minor version fixes some bugs and/or security issues. It also provides new functionalities and features (such as using the latest PHP version which makes your website faster again).

## Documenten uploaden (Joomla 5.3+)

Vanaf Joomla 5.3 kun je bestanden uploaden naar een speciale map voor bestanden in plaats van de map met afbeeldingen. Het lijkt misschien een klein verschil, maar het is een grote verbetering op het gebied van gebruiksvriendelijkheid en sitestructuur.

 Tot nu toe had Joomla standaard alleen de map /images in de Mediabeheerder om te uploaden. Dat betekende: als jij (of je gebruikers) PDF-bestanden of andere documenten wilden uploaden, gingen ze naar de map images, of een submap in de map images (bijvoorbeeld: /images/files).

 U kunt natuurlijk zelf een map maken voor uploads, maar daar hebt u een beetje technische kennis voor nodig. Dus voor gewone sitebeheerders of contentmanagers is dat geen optie.

 Meestal nemen mensen genoegen met het maken van een submap binnen /images, wat heel eenvoudig is. Maar dan zou het pad naar het bestand ergens /images bevatten (uwwebsite/images/files/uwbestand), en dat voelt niet voor iedereen goed. Een afbeelding is een afbeelding en een gedragscode, servicevoorwaarden of welk ander document dan ook is dat niet. Het zijn bestanden en het is gewoon niet logisch om ze in een map met de naam “afbeeldingen” te plaatsen, zelfs als die map een submap heeft.

 
## Nieuwe bestandenmap in Joomla 5.3

 In Joomla 5.3 is er een nieuwe map toegevoegd zodat je de bestemmingsmap voor je bestanden kunt kiezen: /images of /files. Je hoeft hier niets voor te configureren, dit werkt out of the box op nieuwe installaties (voor de techneuten: de plugin “FileSystem - Local” heeft nu beide mappen standaard geconfigureerd).

 In de Media Manager zie je de nieuwe map.

 
## Bestaande websites bijwerken

 Je vraagt je waarschijnlijk af of dit alleen geldt voor nieuwe 5.3 installaties of dat het ook gebruikt kan worden op bijgewerkte sites. Bestaande installaties zullen ook de nieuwe map hebben, met nog geen bestanden erin. Als je het wilt gebruiken, neem dan de volgende stappen na het updaten naar Joomla 5.3:

 Zet in de Media component de optie Path to Files Folder op files;  
Ga naar Systeem -> Plugins en zoek de FileSystem - Local plugin. Voeg bestanden toe aan de lijst met mappen (afbeeldingen staat er al).

 En dat is het: nu kun je de bestandenmap gebruiken om je bestanden te uploaden.

## Upload documents (Joomla 5.3+)

From Joomla 5.3 onwards, you can upload files to a dedicated files folder instead of the images folder. It may seem like a small difference, but it's a big improvement in terms of usability and site structure.

 Until now, Joomla only had the /images folder in the Media Manager for uploading by default. That meant: if you (or your users) wanted to upload PDF files or other documents, they went to the images folder, or a subfolder in the images folder (for example: /images/files).

 You can of course create your own folder for uploads, but you need a bit of technical knowledge to do that. So for ordinary site administrators or content managers, this is not an option.

 Usually people settle for creating a subfolder within /images, which is very simple. But then the path to the file would include /images somewhere (yourwebsite/images/files/yourfile), and that doesn't feel right for everyone. An image is an image and a code of conduct, terms of service or any other document is not. They are files and it just doesn't make sense to put them in a folder called "images", even if that folder has a subfolder.

 
## New file folder in Joomla 5.3

 In Joomla 5.3, a new folder has been added so you can choose the destination folder for your files: /images or /files. You don't need to configure anything for this, this works out of the box on new installations (for the techies: the "FileSystem - Local" plugin now has both folders configured by default).

 In the Media Manager, you will see the new folder.

 
## Update existing websites

 You're probably wondering if this only applies to new 5.3 installations or if it can also be used on updated sites. Existing installations will also have the new folder, with no files in it yet. If you want to use it, take the following steps after updating to Joomla 5.3:

 In the Media component, set the Path to Files Folder option to files;  
Go to System -> Plugins and find the FileSystem - Local plugin. Add files to the list of folders (images is already there).

 And that's it: now you can use the files folder to upload your files.
