# We have detected that your server uses PHP which is outdated

When you log into Joomla, you may see a yellow or red warning about the PHP version you are using.

## The message about outdated PHP

We have detected that your server is using PHP which is outdated and no longer receives official security updates from the developers. The Joomla Project recommends upgrading your site to PHP 7.2 or higher which will receive security updates at least until 2020-11-30. Ask your hoster to make PHP 7.2 or a later version the default version for your site. If your host is already PHP 7.2 ready, enable PHP 7.2 in your site's root folder and 'administrator' folder - you can usually do this yourself by using a tool in your hosting control panel, but it's best to ask your hoster if you're not sure.

## How can I update the PHP version to version 7.2 or higher?

In many cases, you can log into your hosting management environment (such as cPanel, Plesk or DirectAdmin) and update the PHP version there.

If PHP 7.2 or higher is not among your options, you should contact your hosting provider. This PHP version was released on 30 November 2017, so you should expect to be able to use it by now

## My website no longer works after a PHP update

In the hosting management environment, you can also reset the PHP version so that your website will work again.

Make sure your Joomla version is at least 3.9 before switching to PHP7 or higher.

If you use outdated extensions, you might also encounter error messages. So make sure you always use the latest version.

Are no updates available? Then contact the developer of the plugin that gives an error message.

## Disable PHP notification

If you are aware of the outdated PHP version and want to hide the notification, go to extensions > plugin management and find the plugin**"Quick Icon - PHP Version Check**" (or in the English version: **Quick Icon - PHP Version Check**) and depublish the plugin
